About Nanocourses:

Harvard Medical School Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) Nanocourses are short courses that typically meet for a total of 6-8 hours over 2-3 days. These 'rapid-response' classes are developed to fill gaps in the larger curriculum or to address developing topics relevant to the HMS community -- typically related to highly focused scientific content, research techniques or the development of professional skills. Nanocourses are also an opportunity for HMS faculty to reach students when it might be impossible or impractical to mount a semester-long course and for Harvard graduate students to continue learning outside the boundaries of their typical courses. The first session of a nanocourse is typically an overview of the topic and is open to the wider Harvard community. The latter sessions are typically reserved for registered students and are hands-on, active explorations of the topic. Participants are often encouraged to consider how the topic may apply to their own research or professional development.

Faculty interested in developing and offering a Nanocourse should contact CFP@hms.harvard.edu

Earning credit:

Harvard graduate students are able to bundle multiple nanocourses together to receive course credit.

Nanocourses are each worth a single "Milestone" in My Harvard. Each Nanocourse has it's own unique Milestone requirements, and you must meet those requirements in order to earn the Milestones. For questions about meeting the Milestone requirement for each Nanocourse you take, please contact your course adminsitrator ahead of the class starting.

3 Nanocourse (quarter course credit): Students who have taken a total of, and met the Milestone requirements of three nanocourses, can register for CELLBIO300qc and receive credit for a single quarter course on a pass/fail basis.

6 Nanocourse (half course credit): Students who have taken a total of, and met the Milestone requirements of six or more nanocourses, can register for CELLBIO399 and receive credit for a single half course on a pass/fail basis.

PLEASE NOTE: To be considered an Harvard Medical School Division of Medical Sciences Nanocourse that counts toward credit, the Nanocourse MUST be listed on the Nanocourse Archive webpage. Nanocourses cannot be combined for credit with any other courses, workshops, etc. that are not specifically included on the Nanocourse Archive webpage. DMS Nanocourses meet for a certain number of hours and have certain curriculum requirements.
