Peer Instruction: Embracing the Value of the Novice
Saoirse McSharry, PhD
Curriculum Fellow, Cell Biology
Education research shows that, just as researchers and clinicians continually learn from their colleagues, novice students in our classrooms can learn through activities that facilitate peer instruction. The success of such activities,
however, depend on how we structure and plan for those tasks in advance. In this workshop, we will discuss the key
elements of peer instruction that will help us embrace the value of our novice students to give them long-lasting
learning experiences. Topics include benefits and challenges of peer instruction activities, how to prepare for a peer
instruction lecture, and motivating students to “buy in”.
