Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are one of the most frequently used methods for assessing student learning, and in the current remote learning environment they have become even more common. However, many people believe that MCQs can only be used to test student memorization of facts, limiting their utility. In this workshop, we will examine various aspects of writing MCQs that work to assess various levels of student mastery, and discuss some pitfalls to avoid. The workshop will include some time for writing and reviewing MCQs with peers, so please come prepared with a topic or question you would like to develop into one or more MCQs.
