Develop Your Mentoring Philosophy:
a workshop for graduate students and postdocs to create individualized mentoring statements

Temperance Rowell, PhD
Curriculum Fellow, Harvard/MIT MD-PhD Program

Formal and informal mentoring relationships often occur for graduate students and postdocs in the laboratory, classroom, or paracurricular activities. Yet when assuming the position of a mentor in a mentoring relationship, what do you consider to be your role to your mentee? How do you clearly convey your approach, values, and expectations to your mentee? In this workshop, participants will discuss qualities of good mentorship and common themes in mentoring philosophies as they reflect on their personal approach to mentorship. Participants will then begin to develop a mentorship statement to be used in mentoring relationships.
